Every year there are the IT costumes. There's no real rhyme or reason as to why one inane character trumps another. I sometimes wonder whether there's some Darwinism involved. Is there some kind of evolution for trends? Do the fittest survive?
Last year, the V for Vendetta Guy Fawkes costumes were a hit despite the movie's success being lackluster at best. I personally attributed it to people being fed up with the government. Seemed a sound logic at the time. A country full of people afraid to challenge their leaders in even the smallest way instead opt to dress up as a fictional character who tried to completely obliterate every last fucking politician.
This year however, it seems the people have given up hope. At least, in some respects, pretending to be a revolutionary establishes a sincere digust with the current establishment. Unfortunately the tend is different this year. The biggest revolutionary present being Nacho Libre. God Damn Jack Black and his horrible, horrible movies. He's just an ugly little man Hollywood keeps pooping into its diaper. And I for one, am quite sick of wiping him off its ass.
Don't even get me started on Ben Stiller.
The trick with costumes is that they are a whisper of what we really want to be.
So last year Americans wanted change. But since wearing the mask wasn't enough to make that happen, this year they just want fat men in tights.
